Cesar Chavez Day of Action

Cesar Chavez Day is a US federal commemorative holiday, begun by the government in 2014 and has been celebrated in our country since the year of 2000. This holiday is annually recognized on March 31st  and it celebrates the birth and legacy of the civil rights and labor movement activist, Cesar Chavez. This holiday marked the first time a Latino Labor Leader was recognized and honored with its own public legal holiday. With dedication and selflessness, Cesar Chavez fought for farm worker’s rights, economic justice, and civil rights. It is a legacy that he will forever leave in our country and will serve as inspiration for generations to come.

This year in collaboration with the Center for Leadership and Service, Office of Outreach, and our UNT Organizations, we will be having the inaugural Cesar Chavez Day of Action at the University of North Texas. This will occur on Wednesday, March 31st. from 3:00 - 5:00 PM virtually. Our event will spotlight the non-profit, LUPE, an organization founded by labor rights activists César Chávez & Dolores Huerta and the Cesar Chavez Foundation. LUPE builds stronger, healthier communities where colonia residents use the power of civic engagement for social change. Our keynote speaker will be the Foundation's very own Cesar L. Chavez, Digital Strategy Director of the Chavez Foundation as well as participating in speaking celebrations and engagements revolving around his grandfather's legacy across the country. In addition to the day of activities, we will also be hosting a supply drive benefiting Team Brownsville and the Angry Tias and Abuelas, a non-profit whose mission are to provide basic necessities for the health, safety, and support for human dignity and justice, to individuals and families seeking asylum at our borders as they embark on their journeys to designations in the U.S. The supply drive will be in accordance to COVID-19 guidelines by being virtual as well. Participants can purchase an item using an Amazon wishlist and the donation will be sent directly to them so they may disperse supplies as necessary. We look forward to seeing you all there at our event!
